How did KAM Markets develop the hard discount concept to perfection?

KAM Markets ended 2023 with a total revenue of 16,536,815,250 denars, and ranked 7th on the list of the Largest and 40th on the list of the Most Successful Companies in Macedonia.

For 30 years now, KAM DOO cultivates the image of the first and best hard discounter in North Macedonia. It is the most famous and perhaps the best-spread retail chain in North Macedonia, with around 84 stores on the territory of our country and another 28 stores in neighboring Bulgaria.

Starting from the first store, which was opened back in 1995 in the City Shopping Center, KAM markets have been proving for decades that sales concepts, taken from the experiences of developed countries, can be developed in our area.

KAM began its operations in the period when the presence of large retail chains in North Macedonia was not yet sufficiently developed, but by consistently following its initial concepts of work, it managed to survive in times when competition in the retail sector became increasingly fierce, and after 30 years, to be one of the most preferred supermarket chains in Macedonia.

Hence, the question quite logically arises: "What is their secret to success and what does the concept of hard discounting actually represent?"

How did KAM Markets develop the hard discount concept?

The basic operating principle of all hard discounters in the world, including ours, is "the offering of high-quality products at low prices, in conditions with high standards" , which satisfies the two key criteria that consumers most often seek: quality and low costs .

To satisfy this simple concept, hard discounters strive to make savings in operating costs in several aspects:

  •           Opening simple, minimally decorated stores;
  •           Limited selection of products,
  •           As well as a large number of private (own) brands, which often cover around 80% of their range.

In addition to these three key things, cooperation with some important partners who enable their products to be sold at a lower price than usual in hard discounts is also very important.

If you have visited KAM markets, it is clear to you that this principle of operation has been brought to perfection.

The shelves of their (simply decorated) stores feature an assortment of over 1,700 products , of which more than 600 are private labels, and many claim that KAM products are cheaper, but also better than their competitors.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, consumer goods, food products, bakery products, fresh meat... In KAM markets you can find everything you need at the lowest prices at any time, and that is why their markets are often the first choice among consumers.

Additionally, it must be noted that markets regularly have promotional prices on certain products, as well as displays of products related to certain periods of the year, which makes them even more attractive to consumers.

Numerous awards and recognitions as proof of quality service

KAM has been the recipient of prestigious awards and recognitions many times, which only confirms its importance and good positioning in the trade market in Macedonia .

The independent Swiss international agency ICERTIAS has declared KAM the domestic retail chain with the absolute highest level of quality on the Macedonian market for five years in a row.

KAM has received the QUDAL certificate for the fifth year in a row, and it is the result of a consumer survey conducted in North Macedonia by the renowned Swiss agency.

According to research conducted by the reputable agency, KAM is the number 1 choice for consumers in North Macedonia, as the market with the best quality on the domestic market.

Additionally, KAM has been named the market with the best price-quality ratio for the fifth year in a row, according to consumers. KAM received this Best Buy Award as a result of the largest number of votes in a survey conducted on the Macedonian market by the Swiss international agency ICERTIAS.

Within the same research, KAM ranked first in the price-quality ratio for bakeries that are part of the supermarket chain.

Another survey, by "Insider ID", confirms that KAM is the most popular market in North Macedonia.

For 2023/24, as for the previous six years, KAM has been declared the number 1 preferred supermarket chain in the domestic market. Within the same research, KAM also took first place in the subcategories: highest loyalty, best price-quality ratio, and best location coverage.

For years, KAM DOO has been part of the family of 200 LARGEST AND SUCCESSFUL in North Macedonia.

The graph included within club200 over the last 20 years shows only an upward movement of the line in terms of annual profit before tax and in terms of realized revenues.

In 2023, KAM achieved total revenue of 16,536,815,250 denars and profit before tax of 480,279,561 denars .

Percentage,   Compared to the previous year, revenue growth was recorded by 15.56% , while profit before tax growth was 53.24% .

Thanks to these results, KAM Markets ranked 7th on the list of the largest companies and 40th on the list of the most successful companies in North Macedonia.
